I have learned over the last 7 years that riding horses will be a lifelong passion. I love the deep connection that I get to create with my horse teammate. We have to trust each other and work together in order to perform well. In addition, I am competitive and riding gives me a place to compete and challenge myself to improve. I also really enjoy being part of a riding team and making friends with people who share the same passion.
I have had a wide range of riding experiences that have helped me develop as a rider. I started with lessons at a school barn in Minnesota for two years, riding different ponies and horses. At that point I knew I wanted to compete with my own horse. I got that chance with a horse that had previously competed in the Dover Medal Finals and twice finished in the top 10 of the Maclay Finals. I rode him in many classes but really enjoyed and focused on equitation. I learned so much from riding him, and over time won many individual and year-end awards in the MHJA and USHJA Zone 6. Because of previous injuries, we could not jump over 3 feet. I decided to get a different horse because I wanted to compete at a higher level and challenge myself in the national medals.
So, in December of 2019 I imported a young horse from Holland that had never competed in an equitation ring. I have grown so much as a rider by having to train him to do things necessary to be successful in the equitation ring. I know this will take time, but we have made tremendous progress. In our first year we acheved more than I had hoped, qualifying for the Dover Medal Finals, the NHS Hamel Foundation Finals, and the ASPCA Maclay Finals. We competed in the Maclay Finals and had a fantastic experience. Last year we qualified for the Maclay Regionals, the Dover Medal Final, the Gladstone Cup Equitation Final, the NCEA Junior Medal Finals, the USHJA Hunt Seat Medal Final and USHJA Jumping Seat Medal final. We had a great round at the Dover Medal Finals. I am looking forward to seeing what we can achieve together over the next year.
I am hoping to ride at the collegiate level because I want to keep being part of a team. I know it will be a great opportunity to improve, build lasting friendships and contribute to the success of the team.
